Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 21, 2026
Loss Guide ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website at lossguide.org. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data. We wrote this in plain language because legal jargon is the last thing you need right now.
What we collect
Information you provide directly:
- Your loved one's name (optional, used only to personalize your checklist)
- Your ZIP code (optional, used to provide state-specific guidance)
- Your state selection
- Answers to contextual questions (e.g., "Did they have a will?")
- Checklist progress and notes you add to items
- Your email address (if you create an account in the future)
Information collected automatically:
- Standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited, referring URL)
- Device information (screen size, operating system)
We do not currently use third-party analytics services, advertising trackers, or social media pixels. If we add analytics in the future, we will update this policy and notify users.
How we use your information
- To personalize your checklist experience (name, state, contextual items)
- To save your checklist progress so you can return to it
- To improve the website based on aggregate usage patterns
- To respond to support inquiries if you contact us
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your data with third parties for marketing or advertising. We do not use your information for profiling or automated decision-making.
Where your data is stored
Your checklist data (progress, notes, answers) is currently stored locally in your browser using localStorage. This means your data stays on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.
When we launch account features, your data will be encrypted and stored securely in our cloud database (hosted by Supabase on AWS infrastructure in the United States) so you can access it from any device. You will be able to use Loss Guide without creating an account, and your data will remain local in that case.
Cookies
Loss Guide uses only essential cookies required for the website to function (e.g., maintaining your session). We do not use advertising cookies, tracking cookies, or third-party cookies.
Third-party services
Our website is hosted on Vercel. When account features launch, we will use Supabase for authentication and data storage, and Stripe for payment processing. Each of these services has its own privacy policy:
Data retention
Locally stored data remains in your browser until you clear it. If you create an account, we will retain your data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time.
Your rights
Regardless of where you live, we believe you should have control over your personal information. You have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate information
- Delete your account and all associated data
- Export your data in a portable format
- Opt out of any future data collection beyond what is essential for the service
California residents (CCPA/CPRA): You have the right to know what personal information we collect, request its deletion, and opt out of its sale. We do not sell personal information. To exercise your rights, contact us at the email below.
EU/EEA residents (GDPR): Our legal basis for processing your data is legitimate interest (providing the service you requested) and, where applicable, your consent. You have additional rights including data portability and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
Children's privacy
Loss Guide is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we make significant changes to this privacy policy, we will update the date at the top and, if you have an account, notify you by email. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
